Kia ora!
Welcome to my channel and my backyard!
In June 2019 we decided to get serious about growing more of our own food and we've been transforming our backyard to give more growing space!
I am a full time Primary School Teacher, so gardening is something I do for fun outside of work and when I have time. I love the learning I have been doing along the way, and I hope that I can inspire others to get out and garden too!
Join me (and my Husband) as we learn our way through gardening in Christchurch, New Zealand.

if u live up north where we dont get a frost, bung yer cloves in the fridge for 1 or 2 weeks before planting. Also I found that those huge chinese things from Pack n save (6 for $3) grow amazing well. Actually better than the expensive, purpose bought cloves from the large hardware stores.
where is the apricot true and they are fruiting ????
you 2 are adorable
Just discovered your channel and subscribed. My family and I are moving to Christchurch this year and we want to have a big vege garden with chickens so your videos will be very helpful for us. Thank you!
Hey! I’m no longer active on RUclips - but am on Instagram if you’re there - I’m grow.nurture.nourish. I also run gardening workshops through secret gardens :) Where are you moving from?
I just checked out the Secret Garden website. Wonderful resource! I will for sure set up a garden visit with you once we move. Spreydon is actually the neighborhood we are most interested in moving to (or Somerfield/Cashmere) so your garden should be a perfect example of what will be possible. We are coming from California. My youngest son is my gardening buddy so I will probably book a visit for the 2 of us sometime during the second half of this year. Looking forward to meeting you then and learning from you. I will also check out your insta. Thanks so much for providing this resource. -Crystal
👏👏👏👏
Greetings from chch, i am thinking about a greenhouse as well. Where do you get them from? Cheers
Hi Ruth, I am also in Chch and was wondering how do you deal with cats since your vege beds do not have netting please. Thanks
Kia ora Caroline - always great to 'meet' another Christchurch gardener! I have found that with using pea straw and having my plants generally pretty close together I haven't had any issues yet with cats - there is only one cat that visits my yard, but I just haven't seemed to have an issue. I have 2 workshops coming up in July if you would like to come and join - booking details are here secretgardens.co.nz/garden/grow-nurture-nourish/
so what months is a good month to plant tomato, thx
What brand is the greenhouse. Where did you purchase it from
Hey Sonya - we purchased one from Trulux which we brought online and had it shipped to us :)
Can you tell me when (months) to plant & harvest please? I'm in the mountains of Kaikoura, with a very short growing season & I think I harvested mine too early. Try again next season 😁👍
Hi Ruth, where is ur location?why ur soil is such black?my soil is clay,I start to plan the apricot this year,it lookk like not very well.Is ur apricot growing well now?
Hi Tiffany, we're in Christchurch, New Zealand. We're lucky and this is how our sol naturally looks! Our late fruiting one we transplanted last winter to a new spot as it was growing too large - and it's doing wonderfully! If you're on Instagram head over to grow.nurture.nourish to see my updates there
@@grow.nurture.nourish thank u for ur reply,I will download instagram to see ur update.
Is there a difference between brown and red shavers apart from the colour?
Hi Ruth, just wanted to know did you use organic pea straw or dried pea straw that was sprayed?
Kia ora - I use Spray free - I search online and buy direct from the farmer which also makes it A LOT cheaper!
Hello! Lovely videos.. can I ask the size and make of the green house? Thank you
Good morning from Auckland ...what are you putting down in your garden at the moment?! 🙂🙂🙂
Kia ora Peter :) just growing the heat lovers a bit bigger before setting them outside - corn, tomatoes, egg plants, beans, as well as always sowing more lettuce, flowers, kale, spinach, sprouting broccoli. Auckland as about 6 weeks ahead of us, so you’ll be all good to go with your heat lovers! What are you planning on growing?
@@grow.nurture.nourish I will be putting down this spring, tomato’s, chili’s, snow peas, broad beans and that’s about it! Need more feedback to what else I can grow !!! Reason why I watch ya video's...🙂🙂🙂
@@peterstevens6555 If you haven't already - Gardenate is a great site where you can sign up and receive monthly emails (and reminders) which you can tailor to your growing space :)
@@grow.nurture.nourish Just looking at the Gardenate site, it looks so helpful indeed !!! 🙂🙂🙂
Aaaahhh, finally, a channel for gardening in Christchurch! It's so hard to find gardening tips/content on social media that's relevant to our climate/situation
Hi Ann! I completely get what you mean, which is why I started it! But I am currently taking a break from creating new content as it was just taking up too much time away from the garden with a little one in tow! But I am very active on Instagram (grow.nurture.nourish) and I have just started running gardening workshops (in my backyard) through Secret Gardens. What are you planting at the moment?
Hi, Could you please teach me how to sign ''beetroot''? My baby loves it and would like to teach him how to ask for it. Thanks!!
Hi did you sanitize your seed raising pots before use if dirty?
Hey Michelle - I never have sanitised mine first. I know you ‘should’ but have never had any issues
@@grow.nurture.nourish thank you for replying and so quickly😊. Good to know as it was such a process the first lot I used. Thank you I am also in Chch and enjoying your posts.
Wow, what a wonderful young lady your niece is! Great presentation x
If I was to buy Brussel plants when would you plant them in nz? Now or later in the summer season.
Hey - where in NZ are you? I plant seeds in December - they are a winter crop - but need to get some good growth on them over the summer
@@grow.nurture.nourish hello. Sorry I'm from Blenheim. I would like to know when to plant sweet potato also. Have you seen the mother earth garden planner.... it's amazing. I'm using it for the second year and it tell you where last year's family groups were can you can easily plan you crop rotations....
Awesome video, lots of interesting stuff going on, would love to see a spring update
Hey Ailsa - I'm taking a break from making videos at the moment - but if you're on Instagram you can find me at grow.nurture.nourish
You should breed mealworms for your chooks, heaps of tutorials on YT and I got a few beetle listings on trade me which the beetles will lay the eggs for your mealworms.Great Vid
wonderful experience, greetings, I'm from Egypt
Hey there miss watching you. I hope all is okay 😘
Hi Nicola, Thanks so much :) We are very well here, but I decided to put a pause on the videos as I was trying to fit too much into my life and the videos were taking up valuable gardening time! I'm planning on doing one last video sometime soon to let people know
Hi Ruth, good tips about how to use green tomatoes, thank you!
Hey there, With my lettuce I had Black aphids, so I purchased some Lady bugs, They are feasting on the Aphids and my lettuce is no going well
Nice one

Yes please to some scarlet runner bean seeds...that are acclimatized to christchurch 🥰
Awesome! Are you on Instagram? If so feel free to find me and flick me a message rugrew_nz
I've had caterpillars on my peppers in my greenhouse so your caterpillars on your tomatoes may have come from your peppers!
oh interesting! I've never had caterpillars on my tomatoes before!
THANKS
You're welcome!
Love to know more about cover crops. Thanks lovie
Awesome! I'm just learning about them myself - happy to share what I know
I didn't know about the cone thing on hens about laying eggs
Such a handy thing to know! Makes me less frustrated that we are only getting 4 eggs from 6 chickens!
How did your sunflower grow down go, do you feed them to your chooks?
Hey - it went so well!!! Some changes to it this year due to the changing covid mandates, but we still had a wonderful year :) The seeds get saved for next years competition as well as some too the chooks and some to the wild birds
Good to see you back Ruth!
Thanks!
Yay you're back! My pumpkins were pathetic this year too, think the weather was just too whacky for them. Zucchinis for Africa though and love the pole idea. Will try the kiddos on strawberry spinach next yeah I think after your positive review. Ka kite ano from Lincoln 🙂
Thanks!!! Just be careful with the strawberry spinach as I have heard it can be quite invasive - it's only my first year with it, so I'm interested to see if it dies down over winter and if it does come back on it's own next year
It would be really interesting to see that pumpkin cut open. I've never seen anything like it before. My pumpkins grow in the orchard from scraps fed to the chickens. I have a couple of self-sown tomatoes there also, and I think a sunflower has germinated too. Did you know that you can plant the pinched out tomato laterals and they will grow quite easily? I have several tomatoes growing from laterals in my vege garden that are now ripening fruit. We are in the Ruapehu region so could get a frost any day now but will leave my plants in until then. With this long, hot, dry summer the growing season has been a long one.
haha pinching out the laterals and planting them added to my tomato jungle! I've decided that the pumpkin must have become loose and then 'deflated' due to lack of water as it looks quite dry - are you on instagram? If so - I have put a photo up there, otherwise I could take a quick video of it :) Awesome that you still have tomatoes ripening! Hopefully your frost will hold off a bit longer to get some more tomatoes ripened first!
I may try growing my zucchini up a pole.
Definitely worth a try! It has saved me so much room!
Good to see you back
Thanks
Your videos are like a ray of sunshine ☀☀☀☀☀ Glad to see you back
Thanks a bunch
Love the idea of training the courgette up a pole. Definitely doing that next year.
Looking forward to seeing them!
Glad you're back, looking forward to more from you. Pumpkins are the same for me, only got two this year but did get seven spaghetti squash. What variety of corn did you grow? From Blenheim, NZ.
It's always kind of nice to know that others plants haven't gone too well - definitely wish we both had a better crop though!
Great to see you back showing us your transition garden from summer to autumn with lots of lovely mulch everywhere. I've never seen a pumpkin like that! I usually have lots of pumpkins and cucumbers - it was just too hot day after day for them this year, despite regular watering. They didn't like constant heat - I got a few cucumbers in the early weeks, then the plants failed to thrive. I did get some butternut pumpkins, but much smaller than usual, and not many. The climate is strange and unpredictable, so perhaps that has affected your pumpkins also. Look forward to number 2 garden ramble at yours.
Thanks a bunch! I'm such a mulch fan! Yeah I completely agree with the unpredictable climate - there is no 2 seasons that are really alike!
Yay thanks for the update! :D. Its so great that you are saving your own seeds. Its a great skill to have. :)
I completely agree! I really need to work on amount of seeds to save and ensuring I don't save seeds from plants which have cross pollinated
Woohoo glad to see you back, Definitely missed your videos, Greetings from levin New Zealand 🇳🇿
Thanks so much for such a lovely welcome back!
Nice to meet you here, I love Gardening, From rotorua, New Zealand.
